The Oglethorpe cross country and soccer teams will be competing in various SAA championship events on Saturday. The men's and women's cross country teams will battle for their respective conference championships, while the men's and women's soccer teams will play in the quarterfinal rounds of their respective tournaments.
The Petrels will host the SAA Cross Country Championships Saturday morning at Nash Farm Battlefield in Hampton, about 20 miles south of Atlanta. The women's six-kilometer race will get started at 9 a.m., while the men's eight-kilometer is set to get underway at 10 a.m. The men's team finished sixth in the 2016 event, which was held in Clinton, Mississippi, while the women finished seventh. The men's soccer team holds the conference's No. 1 seed headed into the two-weekend SAA Tournament, and will host the No. 8 seed Hendrix Warriors at the Oglethorpe Track and Field Saturday at 3 p.m. in the SAA quarterfinals. The 13-2-1 Petrels will look to follow up on a second straight undefeated run in conference play and a third straight SAA regular season title as they start their journey toward a second SAA tournament crown. The Petrels defeated Hendrix, 6-0, Oct. 6 in Conway, Arkansas, in the regular season meeting between the two teams. Fans can follow along with live stats and video here.
The women's soccer team will take the No. 7 seed into Birmingham, Alabama, to battle the No. 2 seed Birmingham-Southern Panthers in the SAA quarterfinals on Saturday at 8 p.m. Eastern. The Petrels finished the regular season with a 4-10-1 overall mark, but will be looking to follow up on a solid run of play during the back half of the conference schedule. That stretch featured a 3-0 victory over Millsaps, and a narrow 1-0 loss to the Panthers at the Oglethorpe Track and Field on Oct. 15.
