ATLANTA—An early goal from senior Evan Thomas helped the Oglethorpe women's soccer team battle to a 1-1 draw against Brevard Wednesday evening in the Stormy Petrels' 2026 season opener.
Oglethorpe came out of the gates with plenty of energy, and it paid off in just the fifth minute when a long throw-in from Jasmine Cardenas landed in the penalty box and ultimately met the foot of a waiting Thomas who put the Petrels on the board with the first goal of the season.
From there, Oglethorpe and Brevard traded scoring chances, each with a couple of close calls, before Brevard evened things up a 1-1 with a similar goal in the 40th minute. This one came from another long throw-in and met Amberlyn Hernandez who found the back of the net from close range.
Freshman Masha Renggli highlighted the second half with seven saves in another back-and-forth 45 minutes that ultimately saw no mores scores put up by either team. Renggli had a few nice grabs, including one in the 85th minute labeled for the upper corner that she parried away to keep the match deadlocked.
Three minutes later, Rowan Gross nearly gave the Petrels a late winner with a shot to the left side, but a similar save from Brevard's Abby Nunez sent the game to a 1-1 draw.
