Diamond Petrels Win Third Straight
The Oglethorpe University baseball team defeated Atlanta Christian College in East Point, Georgia on Thursday afternoon, 11-2. The Petrels scored four runs in the top of the third to jump in front and never look back on their way to winning their third consecutive road game.
After Atlanta Christian plated a run in the bottom of the first to claim the lead, the Petrels rallied for the four-run third to turn the tide. Oglethorpe stretched out their lead in the 6th inning when both senior J.J. Rizzo and freshman Nick Manai hit solo home runs. The homer for Manai was the first of his college career and capped a 2-4, three RBI and three runs scored effort.
Senior Brendan Pilger continued to impress with a two run homer of his own and sophomore Adam Brazenas went 3-5 with a double in the afternoon win.
Junior short-stop and right-handed pitcher Matt Cornwell pitched 8 strong innings for Oglethorpe, striking out four and allowing only two earned runs to pick up his first win of the season. Freshman Drew Brooks finished the win with a scoreless ninth inning.
Oglethorpe is now 4-1 on the season and will return to Anderson Field to face Washington and Lee this Sunday at 1:00 p.m. Live stats and live audio will be available for the contest at gopetrels.com.
