Petrels Trounce Washington & Lee 14-7

The Oglethorpe baseball team used another offensive onslaught to defeat the visiting Washington & Lee Generals 14-7 Sunday afternoon.

The Petrels used a 10-run outburst in the middle innings to pull away from the visiting Generals. The big hits included a two-run triple by rightfielder Nick Manai in the fifth and a two-run double in the seventh by catcher Adam Brazenas. The Manai triple tied the game after the Petrels had fallen behind early, and a sacrifice fly by Stephen Archer later in the fifth gave them the lead for good.

Oglethorpe fell behind early in this game. They trailed 4-1 after two innings. They were able to tie the game in the third with the help of a two-run triple by third baseman J.J. Rizzo and an RBI single by designated hitter Andy Farrey.

However, the Generals took another three-run lead, scoring three in the fourth for a 7-4 scoreline. From that point, the Petrels started their comeback.

Rizzo had an excellent day for the Petrels, going 4-5 with the triple and two RBIs. Center fielder Brendan Pilger went 4-4 with a double and four runs scored, to go with two stolen bases. Brazenas and Manai had three RBIs each.

Neil Amos picked up the win for the Petrels, throwing 4 1/3 excellent relief innings, allowing just four hits and striking out four.

The win improves Oglethorpe to 5-1 on the year. The 5-1 start matches Oglethorpe's best record through six games since joining the SCAC. The Petrels began both the 1995 and 2002 seasons with the same 5-1 mark. A win over Washington & Lee on Monday would give the Petrels their best start to a season in modern history.

The first pitch on Monday is scheduled for 4 p.m. at Anderson Field.
