Cornwell Breaks School Record in Petrels Win
The Oglethorpe baseball team defeated Johnson & Wales 4-1 on Saturday behind a brilliant pitching performance from Matthew Cornwell to move to 7-2 on the year.
Cornwell threw a complete-game four-hitter, striking out 16 Johnson & Wales batters. The 16 strikeouts is an Oglethorpe modern record, surpassing the mark of 14 set by teammate Mark Hoban last year.
The Petrels single runs in the first, fourth, fifth and eighth innings for the score. The only run Cornwell allowed came in the sixth.
J.J. Rizzo was 2-for-4 for the Petrels, with a home run, a double and two runs scored. Cornwell had an RBI double to go with his brilliant pitching performance, and was 1-for-3.
The Petrels will next be in action next Saturday, when they will face Concordia-Selma in a doubleheader starting at noon from Anderson Field.
