Petrels Sweep Concordia-Selma in Doubleheader

The Oglethorpe baseball team easily swept Concordia-Selma in a doubleheader on Saturday, winning the first game 9-1 and winning the second game 10-2.

In Game 1, the Petrels broke the game open with eight runs in the final three innings they batted in. Left fielder Stephen Archer struck the big blow, socking a mostrous three-run homer in the fifth that struck the facing of the Dorough Field House roof in left-center field.

Archer was 2-for-4 for the game, with the homer and an RBI double, totaling four RBIs.

Matthew Cornwell pitched well in his second straight outing to get the win. Coming off his school single-game record 16 strikeout performance, Cornwell went six innings and allowed only one run on five hits, walking two and striking out three.

In Game 2, it was more of the same for the Petrels. They broke this game open with a six-run third inning. They did all of this with only two hits in the inning, as Concordia pitchers combined to issue seven free passes by way of either hit-by-pitch or walk. A long two-run single by Joseph Parillo was the big blow of the inning.

Neil Amos pitched four strong innings for the win for Oglethorpe, giving up five hits and two runs, though only one was earned.  He walked none and struck out three.

The two wins brings the Petrels' record to 9-2. They will next be in action Sunday afternoon at Maryville (Tenn.), with first pitch at 2 p.m. Their next home game will be Tuesday evening against Atlanta Christian, with first pitch at 6 p.m.
