Petrels Drop Doubleheader at Greensboro
The Oglethorpe baseball team was swept in a doubleheader at Greensboro on Wednesday, losing the first game 3-1 and dropping the second game 5-4.
In Game 1, the Petrels wasted a quality outing from John Hale, only recording three hits - one each from three separate players - and scoring one unearned run. Hale threw a complete game, allowing six hits and just two earned runs. He walked none and struck out two.
In Game 2, the Oglethorpe bats awoke, but the homestanding Greensboro team was still able to outlast the Petrels 5-4. Oglethorpe had fallen behind 4-2 entering the sixth inning of a seven-inning game. But the Petrels put together a two-run inning with help from an RBI single by J.J. Rizzo to tie the game. However, they gave up a run in the bottom of the sixth, and that would be the difference.
Rizzo had a good game for the Petrels in Game 2, going 2-for-3 with an RBI double, a stolen base and two runs scored.
With the two losses, the Petrels are now on an eight-game losing streak, dropping their record to 10-12 on the year. Their conference home opener will be Saturday, as they will start a three-game series with DePauw at 2 p.m.
