Petrels Split Doubleheader with DePauw, Tomorrow's First Pitch Moved to Noon
The Oglethorpe baseball team split a doubleheader with DePauw on Saturday, winning Game 1 9-3 and losing Game 2 8-7.
In Game 1, the Petrels got an excellent pitching performance from Matthew Cornwell, who threw a complete game, allowing two earned runs on five hits, striking out seven and walking none.
The Petrels pulled away late, scoring all nine runs in their last four turns at-bat. They outhit the Tigers 12-5.
J.J. Rizzo and Jonathan McWhorter hit two-run homers in consecutive innings to give the Petrels all the runs they would need. Rizzo's was a towering shot which hit halfway up the roof of Dorough Field House down the left-field line.
Rizzo finished the game 2-for-2 with the home run, a sacrifice bunt, a sacrifice fly, four RBIs and two runs scored.
The Petrels jumped out to an early lead in Game 2, as well, taking a 4-0 lead in the first. After DePauw came back to tie it, the Petrels pushed the lead back out to 7-4 in the sixth. However, they gave up four runs over the next two innings to give up the lead, and could never get it back, losing 8-7.
Matthew Cornwell played well for the Petrels in the loss, going 3-for-4 with a triple, a stolen base, a walk and two runs scored.
In fact, Cornwell busted out of his slump in emphatic fashion Saturday, going 5-for-7 with four runs scored for the doubleheader, to add to his excellent pitching performance.
The results of Saturday move the Petrels to 11-13 on the year, 1-4 in SCAC play. The Petrels will complete their three-game set with DePauw on Sunday. The game, originally scheduled for 1 p.m., has been moved forward to noon due to the threat of inclement weather in the Atlanta area.
