Petrels Clinch Spot in SCAC Baseball Tournament Despite 7-5 Loss to Birmingham Southern
Despite a 7-5 road loss to Birmingham Southern on Sunday, the Diamond Petrels clinched a spot in the SCAC Baseball Tournament. The Petrels salvaged a game from the three-game set on Saturday, then used a DePauw sweep of Centre to vault ahead of the Colonels for the third and final tournament spot out of the East Divison.
The Petrels earned the third seed out of the East, and will start play in the double-elimination tournament by taking on Trinity, the top seed out of the West. The two teams will play their first-round game Thursday at approximately 8 p.m. Eastern. For the second consecutive year, the tournament will take place at USA Stadium in Millington, Tenn.
If the Petrels are able to win that game, they will play either Millsaps or DePauw on Friday evening. If not, they will face an elimination game against either Rhodes or Hendrix Friday afternoon.
As for the game on Sunday, the Petrels got a second-inning run on a Matt Cornwell bunt single to tie the score at 1-1 early. However, they fell behind 6-1 after six innings of play.
In the seventh, the Petrels scored four runs to vault themsevles right back into the game. An RBI single from Cornwell and a two-run single by Jeff Brothers helped the cause, pulling the Petrels to within a run, 6-5.
But Oglethorpe would not score again. Birmingham Southern would right the ship and add an insurance run for the final tally. Though the Petrels outhit the Panthers 11-9, they hit into a pair of double plays and left six men on base.
With the loss, the Petrels drop to 17-18 on the year, and they finish their conference schedule with a 6-8 record.
