The Oglethorpe baseball team dropped its SCAC Tournament first round game on Thursday evening, losing to No. 24 Trinity, 10-1. They will play an elimination game against Rhodes in the second round of the double-elimination tournament on Friday afternoon.
The Petrels fell behind the Tigers 4-0 early on, but got their only run of the game in the third when designated hitter Joe Parillo and third baseman Ryan Grau walked, respectively. They were then sacrificed to second and third by center fielder Jeff Pope, and Parillo scored on a wild pitch.
However, Trinity would get out of the inning with no further run damage and all but put the game away when they scored two more in the bottom of the inning for a 6-1 lead.
The Petrels were never able to get much going against Trinity pitching, tallying only five hits. Parillo and catcher Jeff Brothers went 2-for-4 on the day, though. Brothers laced a double to left-center late in the game for the Petrels' only extra-base hit and Parillo scored the Petrels' only run.
Mark Hoban picked up the loss for Oglethorpe, giving up five earned runs on eight hits over five innnings. He struck out two and walked one.
The loss drops the Petrels to 17-19 on the year, and they will try to avoid elimination against Rhodes Friday afternoon at 4:30 p.m. ET, when the SCAC Tournament continues from USA Stadium in Millington, Tenn.
