The Oglethorpe baseball team lost to the visiting Covenant Scots, 15-6, Tuesday night at Anderson Field. The game was originally supposed to be the home opener, but was rescheduled due to rain. David Langhan suffered the loss for the Petrels. He falls to 1-2 on the year.
The Petrels took a 1-0 lead in the third on a Cory Leff sacrifice fly. However, they watched Covenant storm out to an 8-2 lead in the middle innings. The only respite for the Petrels during that stretch was an RBI double by Leff.
However, the Petrels got three runs back in the sixth to cut the lead to 8-5. After a leadoff double by first baseman Josh Morgan, he found himself at third with two outs. Shortstop Ryan Grau then came through with an RBI single, and the Petrels continued the rally with a Vernon Trice walk and a Jake Spear single to load the bases. Leff and catcher Joe Parillo followed by getting hit by a pitch and walking, respectively, to drive two more runs in and bring the Petrels within three.
Oglethorpe then got out of a bases-loaded, nobody-out jam in the top of the sixth without allowing a run, and added an additional run in the bottom half of the inning.
From that point, though, with the score 8-6 entering the eighth, Covenant put the game away, scoring seven runs over the final two innings, including five in the eighth.
The Petrels were outhit 18-9 in the game, and each team committed four errors. Oglethorpe left 13 men on base to Covenant's nine.
Leff had a busy day, going 1-for-2 with a double, a sacrifice fly, two hit-by-pitches and three RBIs. Parillo went 2-for-3 with a double, two walks and an RBI. Grau went 2-for-4 with a stolen base, an RBI and two runs scored.
The Petrels fall to 6-9 on the year with the loss. They will next be in action on Sunday at 4 p.m., when they will be on their spring break trip in Winter Haven, Fla., taking on Ramapo.
