Petrels Swept on Spring Break Trip, Lose to Washington & Jefferson, 15-4

The Oglethorpe baseball team completed their spring break trip to the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational on Tuesday morning, losing to Washington and Jefferson, 15-4, in Winter Haven, Fla.

Unlike in the previous games of the 0-3 spring break trip, the Petrels jumped out to an early lead on the Presidents, taking a 2-0 lead in the first. Center fielder Vernon Trice led off the game with a walk, then stole second and advanced to third on a groundout. Right fielder Cory Leff smacked a double to the gap in right-center to give the Petrels the 1-0 lead. Then, designated hitter Jeff Brothers walked and third baseman Nick Manai hit an infield single, loading the bases. First baseman Josh Morgan hit into a Presidents' error, allowing a run to score and putting the Petrels up, 2-0.

However, the Petrels would get no more out of the inning. Washington and Jefferson tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the inning, then proceeded to score 12 runs in innings 3-6.

The Petrels got two runs back in the eighth. Four straight singles and a sacrifice fly accounted for the runs. The game had already been put to bed by that point, however.

John Gibbs suffered the loss in relief for the Petrels, dropping to 1-2 on the year. Second baseman Jake Spear had a solid day at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a sacrifice fly.

The loss drops the Petrels to 6-12 on the year. They will return to Atlanta this weekend to start SCAC play, beginning a three-game series against Millsaps on Saturday. The two teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday, beginning at noon. There will be a single game on Sunday.
