The Oglethorpe baseball team lost in seven innings to Birmingham-Southern Sunday afternoon, 16-2. The loss drops the Petrels to 10-24 on the year, 2-10 in SCAC play.
The Petrels fell behind 13-0, as the visiting Panthers scored 12 runs in the third inning. They got a run back in the bottom half of the inning when back-to-back singles by shortstop Jake Spear and right fielder Nick Manai, setting up designated hitter Jeff Brothers with an RBI single.
They scored an additional run in the fourth, when first baseman and left fielder Joey McAlpin hit singles to put runners at first and second. Center fielder Vernon Trice then came through with an RBI single to cut the lead to 13-2.
That would be the last run Oglethorpe would score, though, and Birmingham-Southern added three more runs for the final tally.
Emmett Goodman got the start for the Petrels and suffered the loss, allowing nine earned runs on eight hits over 2 1/3 innings. He walked four and struck out two.
Trice went 2-for-4 with an RBI and second baseman Jake Spear went 2-for-3.
The Petrels will next be in action Wednesday afternoon, when they will travel across town to take on archrival Emory.
