Road Woes Continue for Men
The Oglethorpe University men's basketball team lost to the Millsaps College Majors on Sunday afternoon in Jackson, Mississippi, 66-62. The setback was Oglethorpe's fourth conference loss on the road by fewer than four points.
The Petrels shot 42% (10-24) in the first half and headed into the break trailing the Majors by three, 29-26. Millsaps opened up a 9 point cushion (38-29) at the 17:50 mark of the second half but Oglethorpe twice came back to tie the game: at 44-44 with 9:29 to play and at 51-51 with 5:36 to play. The Petrels claimed their first and only lead of the second half when Wade Weldon drilled a three-pointer with 3:05 showing to make the score 58-57, but the Majors closed the game on 9-4 spurt to grab the win.
Weldon led all Petrels with a 22 point performance that included making 5 of 9 from downtown. Todd Ward scored 10 points and had 7 rebounds while Alex Richey poured in 12 in the loss.
Oglethorpe is now 11-8 on the season and 6-5 in SCAC play. The Petrels are back in action this Friday night when they face Birmingham-Southern at 9:00 p.m. Eastern.
