Ward Leads Three Petrels with Postseason SCAC Honors
The Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference announced its postseason awards on Saturday night and Oglethorpe junior forward Todd Ward headed a list of three Stormy Petrels to earn recognition for their efforts on the basketball court.
Ward, a 6-5 forward from Venice, Florida, received 125 votes from coaches around the league, including one first place vote, to earn 2009-2010 All-SCAC Men's Basketball First Team honors. He was joined by 6-1 junior guard Alex Richey of Alpharetta, Georgia who received 44 votes to place him on the All-SCAC Third Team. Senior guard David Allison of Stuart, Florida rounded out the Petrels with postseason awards by being named All-SCAC Honorable Mention for receiving at least one vote from the coaches across the conference.
Ward achieved First Team honors for the second consecutive
season and was also named SCAC Newcomer-of-the-Year after his
freshman campaign. This season he averaged 13.2 points per game
(12th best in SCAC) and 8.8 rebounds per game (2nd best in SCAC).
He held the league's fourth best shooting percentage (.476) and
blocked the fifth most shots (28). Entering his senior season in
2010-2011, Ward needs only three more points to become only the
thirteenth player in SCAC history with over 1,000 points and 600
rebounds for a career.
Richey had a breakout season for the Petrels, leading them in scoring with 13.6 points per game (10th in the SCAC) to earn his first career postseason accolade. In addition to the bevy of points, Richey ranked fourteenth in the conference in steals with 32 and thirteenth overall in three-pointers made with 42.
Allison missed the Petrels first seven games of the season
but returned with a bang on December 18th to post a career-high 26
points in a 77-71 Petrel victory over Hanover College. He averaged
11.1 points per game and 2.4 assists per game for Oglethorpe this
season. Allison also received Honorable Mention status last season
following his junior campaign.
