Petrels Rout Panthers, 77-47
The men's basketball team dominated LaGrange College in the finale of the 2010 Thanksgiving Classic held on the campus at Emory on Sunday afternoon, 77-47. All 14 players on the Oglethorpe roster scored for head coach Philip Ponder in the runaway win.
The Petrels opened the game on a 19-7 run in the first 6:30 minutes to open up a double-digit lead they would only scarcely relinquish. After the Panthers trimmed the margin to 26-16 with 8:03 to play in the opening half, Oglethorpe took complete control by closing the final 8 minutes on a decisive 16-5 run that gave them an insurmountable 42-21 lead at the break.
The Petrels scorched the nets for a 59% success rate (16 of 27) in the opening half including sinking 6 of 10 treys to ensure the season sweep of LaGrange. Though Oglethorpe cooled off in the second half (35% from the field) they still managed to stretch out the lead as their defense held the Panthers to a dismal 15 of 54 (28%) shooting performance. Oglethorpe out rebounded LaGrange 38-34 on the afternoon and only turned the ball over 12 times versus 18 for the Panthers.
Preseason All-American Todd Ward notched yet another strong game despite playing just 5 second half minutes with 14 points and 6 rebounds to go along with 3 assists, 2 blocks and a steal. Senior Alex Richey was the only other Petrel in double-figures with 10 as every player on the roster played at least 5 minutes and recorded at least one point.
With the win Oglethorpe is 3-2 on the season and will travel to face Berry College this Wednesday night at 7:00 p.m.
