Men's Hoops Scores Victory on Foreign Soil

The men's basketball team, touring Costa Rica and playing hoops, won their first of three games on foreign soil on Monday night over professional squad Escazu, 74-71. The Petrels (shown photoed after the game with opponents) drilled 12 first half three's to open up a big lead and then held on late for the victory.

Oglethorpe used the aforementioned hot shooting to open up a 48-31 halftime lead over the Costa Rican First Division runner-up in Escazu. After the Petrels pushed the lead to 20, Escazu rallied in the second half to trim the lead to 5 with 10:00 to play. The lead eventually dwindled to 2 points with 1:12 remaining but Oglethorpe got the ball to post Andrew Steioff on consecutive possessions and he converted 3 of 4 from the charity stripe to preserve the win.

Sam Purdy led five Petrels in double figures with 15 points and 7 rebounds on the night. Branden Jovaag netted 13, Steioff 11 and Alec Pitts and Tyler Cerone each 10 to pace Oglethorpe. The Petrels will continue play in Costa Rica Tuesday night when they square off with First Division champ Barva.
