The men's basketball team lost to First Division champion Barva (photoed with OU players)of the nation of Costa Rica in the second game of their week-long excusrsion on Tuesday night, 83-74. The Petrels fell behind by 15 points early on but battled back to take a brief second half lead before succombing to the pro team.
Barva is known as the nation's premiere team, having won the last five First Division championships and their length and athleticism ultimately got the best of Oglethorpe. The Petrels came out a touch flat and trailed 28-13 following the first quarter (playing International rules). Coach Ponder's squad responded in the second quarter with an 11-0 run to ultimately cut Barva's lead to 39-35 at halftime.
The Petrels then began the third quarter on an 11-4 spurt to take their first lead at 46-43. The lead, however, was brief, as Barva scored the final six points of the third to carry a 61-55 lead into the fourth where tired legs and careless turnovers doomed Oglethorpe to the loss.
Alec Pitts led the way for OU with 20 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists on the night. Andrew Steioff added 17 points and 6 rebounds while Sam Purdy netted 14 points and grabbed 6 rebounds. Tyler Courson rounded out the Petrels in double figures with 11.
The Petrels will now have a few days off to explore Costa Rica before closing the trip with a Sunday night tilt against the Costa Rican National Team.
