The men's hoops team wrapped up their three-game excursion through Costa Rica on Sunday night by falling at the hands of the local National squad, 87-64. The Petrels fell behind the bigger, more physical National team (shown posing postgame) early in the contest and could not regroup en route to the defeat.
The Petrels got off to a rough start in this one as they were unable to score in the game's first 5 minutes and found themselves trailing 14-0 midway through the first quarter. The Costa Rican National team continued to impose their physical will and Oglethorpe trailed by 23 at the break, 45-22.
Oglethorpe used a 13-4 run to start the second half to cut the lead to 49-35 but could get no closer the rest of the way. The Petrels did manage to play their opponents even over the final 20 minutes, 42-42.
Sophomore guard Alec Pitts led the way for the Petrels with 19 points and 7 assists. Andrew Steioff added 14 points and 10 rebounds in the loss.
