The men's basketball team topped LaGrange College up in Maryville, Tennessee on Sunday afternoon, 83-68. After falling at the Panthers in the season opener, the Petrels exacted a measure of revenge on Sunday by dominating the second half on their way to victory.
The first half was a see-saw affair with the Panthers racing out to a 7 point cushion at the 13:13 mark only to see the Petrels use a 26-14 run to earn a 38-33 lead with 3 minutes remaining in the period. The Panthers regrouped to score 11 of the final 14 points of the stanza to take a 44-41 lead into the locker room. Senior post Andrew Steioff led the charge for Oglethorpe by netting 12 of his 18 points for the contest in the first 20 minutes.
The Petrels jumped in front of the Panthers with an early second half push and held a two or three possession advantage throughout the first nine minutes. Leading 57-53 with 11 minutes left, Oglethorpe put LaGrange away with a decisive spurt that began with a Branden Jovaag three-ball to up the lead to 7. Tyler Cerone buried another three moments later to push the lead to 9 before Jovaag connected again outside the arc to open up a 13 point cushion with 7:19 to play. Layups by Steioff and Sam Purdy capped the 18-4 burst by OU and the score read 75-58 with 6 minutes left and the game became academic for the Petrels moving forward.
Purdy nailed 5-of-6 shots from downtown for a team-high 19 points. Steioff finished with 18 points and 14 rebounds for his first double-double of the season. Jovaag rounded out the Petrels in double-figures with 12 on 4-of-10 shooting from three-point range. The Petrels were deadeyes shooting the ball on Sunday, making 53% of their field goal attempts and 46% from three. They controlled the backboards as well, earning a 42-27 advantage in that category.
Oglethorpe is now 2-3 on the season and will host Piedmont College this Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.
