The men's basketball team picked up their first SCAC win of the season on Sunday afternoon by topping Millsaps College on Pinholster Court, 65-56. The Majors held a brief first half lead that lasted only four minutes of clock time before Oglethorpe raced in front and never looked back en route to victory.
Andrew Steioff scored six of the first 8 points for the Petrels as Oglethorpe built an early 8-0 lead trying to shake off Friday night's tough loss to Rhodes. The Majors battled back and, following a tip-in by Kyle Kinnear with 6:46 to play in the half, led 20-19. The Petrels went on an 11-2 spurt before the half, however, to take a 30-22 lead into the locker room. The run began with two Steioff free throws, included two steals that led to hoops and was capped by a Branden Jovaag three-ball just before the horn.
Oglethorpe continued their hot stretch at the outset of the second stanza and pushed the lead all the way to 17 points with 14:35 to play following a lay-up from Steioff. The Majors made a push to cut the lead down to seven with 2:18 to play but were physically spent from scrambling to extend the game. The Petrels made 10-of-12 free throws in the final two minutes to quell any notion of a Millsaps comeback.
Steioff led the charge for the Petrels, scoring 22 points on 8-of-13 shooting from the field. Oglethorpe's backcourt also enjoyed a fine all-around outing as Christian Molinet tallied 13 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists and two steals and Alec Pitts netted 6 points while grabbing a team-high 9 rebounds and dishing a team-high 5 assists. Jovaag added 8 points on 3-of-6 shooting from the floor.
With the win Oglethorpe is now 6-8 on the season and 1-4 in SCAC play. The Petrels travel to Texas to face Trinity this Friday at 8:00 p.m.
