Hot Shooting Panthers Too Much For Petrels

The men's basketball team lost 92-80 on the road at Birmingham-Southern on Saturday night to a hot shooting Panther squad. The No. 8 ranked Panthers made 56% of their shots and drilled 11 treys to keep a game Petrel squad at bay. The Petrels now need a Sewanee loss to Millsaps tomorrow to make the SCAC Tournament.

Oglethorpe captured an early 4-3 advantage following a lay-up from Andrew Steioff but that lead would only last 15 seconds after Zac Richards scored for Southern on the following trip down the floor. The Petrels would never lead again as the Panthers converted field goals on 9 of their first 13 possessions to build a 21-14 cushion.

Oglethorpe hung with the Panthers in the first half by getting 15 points on the interior from Steioff who made 7-of-11 shots. The Petrels made 16-of-33 (48.5%) field goals in the first 20 minutes and got a Christian Molinet three-pointer just before the half expired, their fourth three of the stanza. Still, Oglethorpe trailed the No. 8 team by 9 points, 48-39.

Sam Purdy connected on a three-ball to start the second half scoring and bring Oglethorpe within six at 48-42. The Panthers responded with a bucket and a three ball on ensuing trips to up the margin to 11 and the Petrels would only once get the lead below double-digits the remainder of the night. Southern would eventually extend the lead all the way up to 21 points as they hit shot after shot from the perimeter.

Steioff led all Petrels with 25 points on 11-of-18 shooting to go along with 8 rebounds. Branden Jovaag connected on 4-of-7 from downtown en route to 14 points and 8 rebounds while Alec Pitts and Molinet tallied 13 and 10 points, respectively.

The Petrels finish the regular season 11-14 overall and 6-10 in SCAC play. They will need Sewanee to lose to Millsaps tomorrow to qualify for the SCAC Tournament. Check back to gopetrels.com for updates.
