Men's Basketball Trounces Johnson U. in Season Opener

The Oglethorpe men's basketball team opened its season in fine fashion Saturday afternoon, defeating Johnson University, 89-58, in Knoxville, Tenn.

The Petrels led just 30-26 at halftime, and the home-standing Preachers scored the first basket of the second half, cutting the Oglethorpe lead to 30-28. However, from that point forward, the Petrels really turned it on, outscoring Johnson 59-30 the rest of the way for the comfortable 31-point win.

Senior guard Christian Molinet filled up the stat sheet this afternoon. He scored 18 points on 8-of-12 shooting, and added seven rebounds, six assists and five steals. Senior guard Branden Jovaag finished as the Petrels' leading scorer with 19 points on 7-of-15 shooting. Sophomore guard Alex Davis, junior guard Tyler Courson and sophomore center Jordan Kinney finished with eight points apiece.

The 1-0 Petrels will next be in action Tuesday night, when they travel to Demorest, Ga., to take on Piedmont. The game will tip-off at 7 p.m.
