The Oglethorpe men's basketball team outscored Maryville by 15 points in the second half Saturday evening at Dorough Field House en route to a 69-56 victory in Day 1 of the Oglethorpe Thanksgiving Classic.
Down 34-32 at halftime, the Petrels started the second half on a 22-6 run. Five straight points from junior forward Tyler Courson capped the run and gave them a 54-38 lead, the 16-point margin serving as the largest lead of the game. Maryville started to eat away at the lead, but a couple of huge baskets helped the Petrels maintain their advantage. Senior guard Christian Molinet hit a jumper at the 8:44 mark of the second half to extend the lead to 15 at 58-43, freshman guard Drew Patrick added a layup at 8:14 to give the Petrels a 60-46 advantage, senior center Price Hamilton buried a jumper with 6:34 left to push the lead back to 14, and senior guard Branden Jovaag made a layup with 2:36 left to give the Petrels a 65-50 lead. From there, the Petrels were able to cruise home for the comfortable 13-point win.
In the first half, Oglethorpe jumped out to an early 19-8 lead with 10:22 remaining in the half, but saw Maryville go on a 17-4 run to erase that deficit and take a two-point lead of their own into halftime.
Courson finished with a game-high 15 points on the evening, shooting 6-of-9, 3-of-5 from beyond-the-arc. Molinet finished with 14 points on 6-of-10 shooting. He added six assists.
The 3-0 Petrels will return to complete the Oglethorpe Thanksgiving Classic on Sunday afternoon. They will take on LaGrange at approximately 4 p.m.
