The Oglethorpe men's basketball team got off to an excellent start on its two-day trip to Daytona Beach, Fla., for the Daytona Beach Shootout, defeating Roanoke, 86-73, Thursday night.
The first half was a back-and-forth affair, with Roanoke taking the lead early only to see Oglethorpe come back later. Roanoke had a 16-12 lead seven minutes into the game, and after the Petrels cut the lead to one, Roanoke took the lead back out to five at 20-15 with 10:30 remaining in the half. The Petrels ran off five straight points over the next minute to tie it, though, 20-20, and this was followed by five straight Roanoke points to lead by five again, 25-20, with 7:57 remaining in the half. However, from that point until the end of the half, the Petrels went on a 19-7 run, establishing control of the game and taking a 39-32 lead into the locker room.
Roanoke never led again after that run. They got to within a single point twice in the second half, but could never tie the game back up, either. After Roanoke brought the score back to 48-47 with 15 minutes left, the Petrels steadily pulled away, going on a 29-11 run over the next nine minutes to put the game away.
Senior guard Branden Jovaag led the Petrels in scoring on the night, pouring in 20 points on 7-of-13 shooting and five three-point baskets. Senior guard Christian Molinet came close to a triple-double on the night, instead settling for a double-double. He scored 12 points, grabbed 14 rebounds and passed out eight assists. He also swiped four steals on the night.
The win improves the Petrels to 8-2 on the season. They will conclude their Daytona Beach Shootout schedule Friday evening when they take on Fontbonne at 6 p.m. They will then return home to take on Dallas next Saturday at 7 p.m.
