The Oglethorpe men's basketball team will come home 1-1 from the Daytona Beach Shootout after dropping their second and final game of the holiday tournament to Fontbonne Friday evening, 64-60.
The Petrels did not shoot the ball well in the first half and trailed 26-16 at halftime. In the second half, Fontbonne looked like they would pull away from the Stormy Petrels, as they continued to lead by around 10 points for the first 10 minutes of the half. They led by as many as 13 points with just under 13 minutes remaining. Then, Oglethorpe slowly started to mount a comeback. They went on a 14-4 run over the next five minutes to pull back within three points, 46-43, with 7:40 remaining. The Petrels continued their comeback and tied the game at 51-51 on a Christian Molinet layup with 4:46 remaining. Fontbonne retook the lead, but the Petrels tied it again at 53-53 on an Alex Davis layup with 4:34 left. However, Oglethorpe would never lead, and Fontbonne went back ahead seconds later and did not relinquish the lead again. Oglethorpe was within one, 61-60, with a minute remaining, but Fontbonne scored the final three points of the game and held on for the 64-60 victory.
Center Jordan Kinney led the Petrels with 18 points on 7-of-13 shooting and 4-of-4 free-throw shooting. Guard Alex Davis scored 11 points on 5-of-8 shooting. Guard Branden Jovaag, whos had been shooting the ball extremely well in recent games, suffered an off night, scoring six points on 2-of-8 shooting. The Petrels were outrebounded 48-37 in the contest.
The Petrels drop to 8-3 on the season. They will take a week off for the Christmas holiday and will next be in action next Saturday, when former SCAC opponent Dallas pays a visit to Dorough Field House to take on the Petrels. The game will tip off at 7 p.m.
