The Oglethorpe University men's golf team finished in fifth place at the Callaway Collegiate Invitational held in Pine Mountain, Georgia. The Petrels posted a two-day team total of 616 to finish 22 strokes behind tournament winner Darton College.
The 5th ranked Petrels turned in the third best finish among Division III schools competing in the field, trailing No. 1 Methodist (599) by 17 strokes and No. 10 Rhodes College (613) by only three strokes.
The golfers battled difficult weather conditions that sent scores soaring during day two play on the 7,057 yard par 72 Mountain View Golf Course at Callaway Gardens. Sophomore Craig Stevenson from Sarasota, Florida was the highest finishing Petrel after posting a two-day total of 151 (76-75), good for a tie for 12th place overall. Junior Matt Rebitch of Delmont, Pennsylvania carded a total of 153 (74-79) to finish in a tie for 19th and senior Scott Pugh (Harisburg, Penn.) was one stroke behind in a tie for 22nd.
Sophomore Jordan Hall of Tifton, Georgia finished tied for 35th with a total of 158 (78-80) and senior Michael Hicks of Tuscaloosa, Alabama posted a 181 (94-87) to come home tied for 78th. Freshman Eric Quinn of Norcross, Georgia competed as an individual for Oglethorpe and performed well with a total of 160 (82-78) which tied him for 41st place.
The men will have a few weeks off before hosting the Jekyll Island Collegiate Invitational beginning March 18.
