Men's Golf Ranked #1 in 2009 Preseason Poll

After winning the school's first national championship of any kind last May, the Oglethorpe University men's golf team will enter the 2009 season ranked No. 1 in the Nike / Golf World Magazine Coaches Poll.

The defending champion Stormy Petrels received 10 of the 17 first place votes to secure the top spot. Voters were doubtlessly influenced by the fact that Oglethorpe has finished no worse than third place in any tournament since last October and secured three tournament wins, including the National Championship, in that same time span.

Oglethorpe will again need to hold off the likes of Huntingdon College (2nd), Methodist College (3rd), the University of La Verne (4th) and UT-Tyler (5th) if they want to repeat as National Champions.

The Petrels begin the fall season on September 18 when they travel to Tunica, Mississippi to compete in the Rhodes Fall Collegiate Classic. To view the complete Nike / Golf World Magazine Coaches Poll, go here
