With the traditional fall sports now underway, gopetrels.com takes a look at the Petrels athletic teams who run a dual schedule during both the fall and spring. Here's a look at how the 2010 men's golf team stacks up.
After building a national powerhouse that delivered the school's first national championship in 2009, Head Coach Jim Owen has once again assembled a cast of talented golfers that will vie for 2011 crown. The 2010 team posted another top-10 finish at the NCAA Championships (6th place) in Hershey, Penn. and will look to build on that momentum heading into the 2010-2011 season. Here's a look at the players and the schedule they will face in their quest to recapture both the SCAC Championship and the National Title.
While the 2010-2011 roster boasts a wealth of experienced golfers for Coach Owen, none will enter the season as a senior. Owen, rather, has compiled a stable of three juniors, one sophomore and a whopping seven freshman who will all compete to crack the starting five lineup. The juniors on the squad include veteran talents Craig Stevenson (Sarasota, Fla.), Jordan Hall (Tifton) and Matt Bernstein (Alpharetta) who have each competed in an NCAA Championship. The lone sophomore on the squad is Eric Quinn (Norcross) who recorded the Petrels best individual finish (31st) at the 2010 Championships.
The freshmen joining the squad are Anthony Amodeo (Marietta), Patrick Cansfield (Port Huron, Mich.), Lewis Gregory (Sheringham, UK), Corey Hall (Woodstock), Stephen Harris (Macon), Hayden Jones (Orlando, Fla.) and Daniel Simonsen (Mequon, Wis.). Each will have a chance to battle their way into the Petrels first team.
The 2010-2011 schedule, as always, features many highlights. The team gets underway in the fall with the Golfweek Invitational (Sept 11) featuring each of the nation's top-10 teams at the Southern Dunes Golf Club in Haines, Fla. The team then travels to Tunica, Miss. for the annual Rhodes Fall Classic (Sept 25) before returning to the state to compete in the Chick-fil-A Classic (Oct. 4) in Rome. The fall schedule concludes with the prestigious Gordin Collegiate Classic (Oct. 9) in Greensboro, N.C. and Oglethorpe's yearly host event, The Royal Lakes Fall Classic (Oct. 17) in Flowery Branch.
The spring schedule begins in Montgomery, Ala. for the Wynlakes Classic (March 6) before Oglethorpe hosts their famed Jekyll Island Collegiate (March 17) on the Pine Lakes Golf Course. The team travels back to Jacksonville, N.C. for the Camp Lejeune Invitational (March 24) before returning to compete in the Emory Spring Invitational (April 10) at Stone Mountain. The 2010-2011 season concludes at the SCAC Championships (April 21) in Marble Falls, Texas where the Petrels hope to qualify for the 2011 NCAA Division III Championships (May 8) at the Grandover Resort in Greensboro, N.C.
