Oglethorpe Holds Slim Lead in Race for Georgia Cup
Oglethorpe University (298.647), trying to claim its 11th consecutive GA CUP crown, has a slim .252 lead over cross town rival Emory University (298.905) and just under a two stroke lead over Berry College (300.5) as the Fall Season comes to a close. LaGrange (307), Covenant (310), and Piedmont (317) rounded out the six GA Cup competitors.
The GA cup was contested over the course of seven 2010 Fall Season Tournaments with each tournament weighted and the scores adjusted by the number of teams in the field. The more GA Cup teams in the field the more heavily weighted the tournament. This Fall the Royal Lakes Invitational included five of the six GA Cup teams, and each of the team and individual scores counted four times. The Berry College/ Chick Fil A Collegiate had four GA Cup teams in the field and the scores were weighted three times. In the other five Fall events the scores were weighed either once or twice.
In the Spring the six teams will vie for the GA Cup Trophy over seven separate tournaments concluding with the Emory University Stone Mountain Invitational in mid April. A Player of the Year and a seven member All State Team will be named at a ceremony after the final round at Stone Mountain. All six teams are scheduled to participate at Stone Mountain making that tournament the first in GA Cup history to host all six teams in the field and the scores weighted times five.
The Jekyll Island Collegiate and the Huntingdon event at Wynlakes are projected to have four teams each. Other Spring events include Berry, Piedmont, Covenant, and Camp Lejeune.
