The men's golf team fired a team total of 298 at the Stone Mountain Golf Course to finish in second place, just a scant three strokes behind tournament host and winner, Emory University.
Despite finishing second, Oglethorpe, ranked 9th in the latest Division III poll, topped four schools currently ranked ahead of the Petrels heading into the Emory Invitational. The Petrels bested the nation's No. 1 (Guilford), No. 2 (Methodist), No. 4 (Greensboro) and No. 8 (Centre) ranked teams en route to coming up just three strokes shy of Emory (ranked No. 11).
Sophomore Eric Quinn led the way with a two-day total of 145 (+5), good for second place individually. Senior Craig Stevenson rallied to post a 71 on Tuesday to finish at +7 in fifth place overall. Freshman Anthony Amodeo came home in a tie for 17th place after posting a two-day total of 152 (+12) while Jordan Hall finished tied for 29th after carding a 155 (+15). Freshman Patrick Cansfield rounded out the scoring for the Petrels by finishing in a tie for 41st place amongst the 89 golfers competing.
The Oglethorpe "B" team also showed well, finishing in 11th place overall and 36 strokes off the pace set by Emory. The "B' team, consisting of four freshman, was led by Hayden Jones whose 153 was good for a tie for 19th place. The "B" team also got strong contributions from Corey Hall, Lewis Gregory and Stephen Harris.
With the result from the Emory Invitational, Oglethorpe appears poised to earn its 11th consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament. The Petrels conclude the 2011 season at the SCAC Tourney hosted by Trinity in Texas on April 21.
