The men's golf team, ranked No. 6 in the nation, battled to a fifth place finish at the 2011 Gordin Collegiate NCAA D-III Fall Preview that concluded today. The fifth place result is a solid one considering the field included the top-18 D-III men's golf teams in the nation.
The Petrels rallied from a 10th place tie after the first round to jump up five spots with two excellent closing rounds. Oglethorpe shot a team-total of 905 to finish 16 strokes off the pace of tournament winner Methodist. The Petrels were just a scant two-strokes from claiming a second place tie with Illinois Wesleyan and Guilford College.
Freshman Anthony Maccaglia led the charge with rounds of 73-70-78 for a total of 221, good for a tied for 5th place result individually. Junior Eric Quinn, senior Matt Rebitch and senior Jordan Hall each carded three-day totals of 228 to finish in a tie for 16th place overall. Sophomore Anthony Amodeo shot 240 to finish in a tie for 75th place to round out the starting five for head coach Jim Owen.
The Petrels also entered two individuals in the famed tournament - freshman Kentaro Toyota and sophomore Patrick Cansfield. Toyota shot a three-day total of 235, good for a tied for 48th place finish. Cansfield carded a total of 239 to come home in a tie for 72nd.
The Petrels are back in action next weekend when they compete in the Chick-fil-A Fall Classic at the Coosa Country Club in Rome, Ga.
