The men's golf team continued their strong spring season this weekend by battling 30 top tier programs and earning a second place finish at the Jekyll Island Collegiate Invitational which Oglethorpe hosts annually.
The Methodist Monarchs, ranked No. 3 in the latest Nike / Golf World Coaches Poll, led the field-wire-to-wire to best Oglethorpe by 12 strokes. The Petrels, however, topped 13 of the nation's Top 20 ranked schools in head-to-head competition with their second place finish. Coming on the heels of their win at the Wynter Wynlakes, the Petrels are now in prime position for another invite to the NCAA Championships. Among the Top 10 ranked schools Oglethorpe bested were No. 2 Illinois Wesleyan, No. 4 UT-Tyler, No. 5 Claremont, No. 8 Christopher Newport, No. 9 St. John's (Minn.) and No. 10 Huntingdon.
The Stormy Petrel squad was led by the outstanding performances of freshman Anthony Maccaglia and junior Eric Quinn, who each tied for second place individually after posting three-day totals of -6. They were just one stroke back of tournament medalist Mike Wesko of Methodist. Hayden Jones played his three rounds at 6-over par to finish in a tie for 32nd place while senior Matt Rebitch carded a +13 to come home tied for 69th. Sophomore Anthony Amodeo rounded out the scoring for Oglethorpe by posting +17 and finishing tied for 8th overall.
The golfers will likely earn a jump in the upcoming Top 25 poll while they take a week off to get ready for the Camp Lejeune Invitational on March 29.
