Park Leads Men's Golf Individuals at Chick-fil-A Collegiate Invitational

The Oglethorpe men's golf team finished out its fall season with some very good performances from a group of six individuals Tuesday at the Chick-fil-A Collegiate Invitational in Rome, Georgia. The group was led on Tuesday by freshman Kenny Park, who carded the best round by any Stormy Petrel over the course of the 36-hole tournament at Stonebridge Golf Club. He posted an even-par 72 to move 28 spots up the leaderboard into a tie for 15th place at 5-over-par 149, 14 strokes behind individual medalist Osborn Theam from LaGrange.

Park was joined in the top half of th field by junior Alex Norman, who moved 13 spots up the leaderboard himself with a 5-over 77 on Tuesday, putting him at 11-over 155 for the tournament. He finished tied for 40th, 20 strokes behind Theam.

Freshman Ron Johnson posted a 7-over 79 on Tuesday for a 13-over 157 on the week. Freshman Chris Cerminaro carded a 5-over 77 on the day for an 18-over 162 for the tournament while fellow freshman Logan Fuglestad shot a 7-over 79 on Tuesday for a 21-over 165 total. Freshman Luke Ashworth finished up his tournament with a 17-over 89, putting him at 27-over 171 for the event.

SAA opponent Rhodes took the title with a 5-under 571 on the week, one stroke ahead of LaGrange. Berry finished in third place, 25 strokes behind the Lynx, while North Carolina Wesleyan and Huntingdon's second team finished tied for fourth. If the Petrels had fielded a team, they'd have finished 12th at 26-over 620 for the tournament after a 17-over 305 on the day.

"It was a decent tournament for the young guys," said Oglethorpe Director of Golf Jim Owen. "We were hoping for slightly steadier golf, but we did come back today and knock 10 strokes off our Monday score. Our signature as a team has been hitting greens in regulations, but we just didn't do that enough to be competitive this week."

"I'm proud of Kenny," Owen continued. "He played very well on Tuesday, putting up a 72. He finished 5-over par for the tournament and all five were penalty strokes, so if he cleans those up, he's in sixth place in this tournament. If he can continue to clean up his mistakes, he'll be a factor in the spring."

"These guys will now have a four-month break to recharge their batteries, work on their games individually, and get ready to make another run at the lineup in the spring," Owen concluded.
