The Oglethorpe men's golf team wound out the regular season at No. 7 in the final Division III Bushnell Golfweek Coaches Poll of the campaign, released Friday by the Golf Coaches Association of America. The Stormy Petrels dropped a single spot from No. 6 in the April 21 poll after taking home third place at the SAA Golf Championships in Arkansas April 21 through 23.
Huntingdon remained atop the ranking for the eighth poll in a row, claiming 13 of a possible 14 first-place votes. Texas-Tyler remained at No. 2 for the third straight poll, while Emory and Mary Hardin-Baylor each moved up a spot to third and fourth, respectively. Methodist dropped two spots to fifth, but maintained their lone first-place vote from the previous poll. LaGrange switched spots with Oglethorpe, with the Panthers moving up to No. 6. Rhodes, Greensboro and Wittenberg rounded out the top 10.
All four SAA teams from the previous poll remained in the top 25, with Berry (No. 16) and Sewanee (No. 20) joining Oglethorpe and Rhodes in the ranking. Centre remained among those also receiving votes, while Birmingham-Southern picked up a couple of votes and moved into that category, as well.
All four teams from Georgia remained in the poll, as well, with the Petrels, Emory, LaGrange and Berry all earning recognition. Piedmont remained among those teams also receiving votes.
The Petrels will now wait to see if they earn a spot in the NCAA Division III Men's Golf Championship for the 18th time overall and 17th time in a row. The NCAA committee will announce the tournament field on Monday. The championship will be co-hosted by Oglethorpe and the Central Florida Sports Commission, and will be held May 16 through 19 at Mission Inn Resort and Club in Howey-in-the-Hills, Florida.
