The Oglethorpe men's golf team came in at No. 13 in the latest Division III Bushnell Golfweek Coaches Poll, released Friday afternoon by the Golf Coaches Association of America. The Stormy Petrels dropped a couple spots from the No. 11 slot they held in the preseason poll.
The Petrels posted a first-place finish at the SAA Preview in Dickson, Tennessee, on Sept. 10, tying with Sewanee for the title, and followed that up with a 12th-place finish at the Tournament Town Championship Preview in Greensboro, North Carolina, over the weekend, an event that featured 15 teams that are currently in the top 25, including all of the top 11 teams in the poll.
Texas-Tyler held onto the top spot in the rankings, garnering 16 of a possible 20 first-place votes, after winning the Tournament Town Championship Preview. Huntingdon moved up three spots to second, Emory climbed three spots to No. 3 and took a couple first-place votes with them, Illinois Wesleyan moved up to fourth, and Methodist came in at fifth. Guilford, Concordia (Texas), Wittenberg, Washington and Lee, and SAA member Sewanee rounded out the top 10, respectively, with Guilford taking the other first-place vote.
The Petrels served as one of four SAA teams in the new top 25. No. 15 Rhodes and No. 19 Berry joined the Petrels and Tigers, with Centre and Birmingham-Southern also receiving votes.
Oglethorpe was also one of four teams from Georgia to make their way into the top 25, with No. 24 LaGrange joining the Petrels, Eagles and Vikings. Piedmont was among those also receiving votes.
The Petrels will next be in action at their Oglethorpe-Royal Lakes Fall Invitational, set to take place Oct. 7 and 8 at Royal Lakes Golf and Country Club in Flowery Branch. After that, they'll travel to Miramar Beach, Florida, and the Raven Golf Club at Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort for their last major tournament of the fall, the Golfweek Division III Fall Invitational. That event takes place Oct. 15 through 17.
