Men's Golf Finishes Fall Season at No. 18 in Coaches Poll

The Oglethorpe men's golf team dropped two spots to No. 18 in the final Division III Bushnell Golfweek Coaches Poll of the fall season, selected by the Golf Coaches Association of America. The Stormy Petrels fell from the No. 16 spot in the Oct. 20 poll and from a high of 11th in the preseason poll.

The Petrels bounced back from a tough early October with their second trophy of the season Oct. 23 and 24, as they took the Chick-fil-A Collegiate Invitational by eight strokes over No. 21 North Carolina Wesleyan. Junior Jacob Arnett won a share of his second individual medal in the process, firing three straight under-par rounds and finishing at 5-under-par 211 for the tournament at Rome's Stonebridge Golf Club. That served as a significant comeback after their fifth-place finish at the Oglethorpe-Royal Lakes Fall Invitational and their 10th-place finish at the Golfweek Division III Fall Invitational.

Texas-Tyler vaulted back into first place, receiving 12 of a possible 15 first-place votes and earning the top spot for the third time in the four fall season polls. Huntingdon, who held the top spot in the previous poll, kept two first-place votes but fell to No. 2. Illinois Wesleyan held at No. 3, while St. Thomas (Minnesota) vaulted two spots into No. 4, surpassing No. 5 Emory and No. 6 Methodist. Emory earned the remaining first-place vote. Concordia (Texas), Washington and Lee, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, Greensboro, Saint John's and Sewanee rounded out the top 10, with the last three tying for the No. 10 spot. Willamette and Wittenberg vaulted the Petrels from the previous poll, coming in at Nos. 16 and 17, respectively.

The Petrels served as one of three SAA teams in the latest poll release, with No. 15 Rhodes joining Oglethorpe and Sewanee. Berry and Birmingham-Southern also received votes.

Oglethorpe served as one of two teams from Georgia in the final poll of the fall, joining No. 5 Emory. Piedmont also received votes in the poll.

The Petrels will get their spring season fired up on March 5, when they travel to Pine Mountain for the Callaway Gardens Collegiate Invitational, which is set to take place March 5 and 6 at Callaway Gardens' Mountain View course.

The first Bushnell Golfweek poll of the spring will be released on Feb. 16.
