In a battle of two first-year lacrosse programs, the Centre College Colonels topped Oglethorpe on Sunday afternoon on Salamone Field, 21-8. The Colonels jumped out to an 11-2 advantage at halftime and held off a Petrels rally in the second stanza for the victory.
The Petrels tied the score at one apiece in the first quarter when Arness Holsey scored on a great individual move for the unassisted tally. Centre, however, rattled off the next six strikes to take control of the contest. Garret LeBlanc scored on an excellent feed from Maseo Brown to break up the Colonel run but, when the dust had settled, the Petrels were staring at a nine gola deficit at halftime.
Oglethorpe settled down in a second half that was much more even. The Colonels outscored Oglethorpe 10-6 in a second stanza that was more indicative of Oglethorpe's style of play. The Petrels got three tallies from Michael Kasmarik, two from Holsey and one from LeBlanc to cap the scoring at 21-8.
The Colonels outshot the Petrels 66-31 and were successful on 18 of 19 clearance attempts to control the outcome. Oglethorpe did a better job of tracking down ground ball in this contest, only trailing Centre 46-40 in that category.
Oglethorpe is now 2-6 on the season and will face Berry College on Wednesday before facing the daunting task of squaring off with lacrosse stalwart Colorado College in Colorado Springs this coming Friday.
