The men's lacrosse team lost at Berry College in Rome, Ga. on Wednesday evening, 15-4. Playing without three injured starters, the short-handed Petrels hung tough until a flurry of 5 straight Viking goals in the final 7 minutes of the first half put the game out of reach.
The game remained scoreless through the first seven minutes of the first quarter with both defenses performing well. The Vikings then jumped out to a lead with even strength goals at the 6:28 and 4:45 mark of the period. The Petrels tallied the final goal of the first on an unassisted strike from Garret LeBlanc and the Vikings held a slim 2-1 advantage.
The two teams alternated goals to start the second quarter with Oglethorpe getting a strikes from Trevor Byrum and Maseo Brown to trim the Viking lead to 4-3 with 7:52 to play in the half. That's when Berry ripped off the final five tallies of the stanza to suddenly claim an insurmountable 9-3 advantage.
Arness Holsey added a second half goal to cap the Petrel scoring in the 15-4 defeat. Despite the loss the Petrels showed great improvement in the clearance opportunities, converting 10 of 15 opportunities in the first half and 16 of 29 overall. Goalie John Brewer was credited was 17 saves on the afternoon.
Oglethorpe is now 2-7 on the season and will travel out west for conference games against Colorado (5:30 p.m. Eastern Friday) and Southwestern (2:00 p.m. Eastern Sunday).
