The lacrosse team lost to Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas on Sunday afternoon, 22-3. The Petrels trailed 5-3 following an Arness Holsey strike early in the second quarter but the Pirates tallied the final 18 goals of the contest to earn the lopsided win.
Competing with only 13 healthy players the Petrels hung tough in the early stages before their legs gave way in the second stanza. The Pirates jumped out to a 2-0 advantage but Oglethorpe rallied to scratch the next two, the first from Holsey on a feed from Dustin Carnahan and the second from Carnahan himself to knot the score at 2 apiece with 2:38 to play in the first.
Southwestern netted the next three strikes before Holsey notched what would be Oglethorpe's final tally to make the score 5-3 with 14:38 to play in the second. From there, the Petrels struggled to maintain possession and get good looks as Southwestern's strength in numbers took over.
The Petrels were successful on 9 of 14 clearance attempts in the first half but could only clear 4 of 9 in the second half as their legs grew weary. And, after hanging tough in the first, the Pirates outshot the Petrels 37-7 in the decisive second half. The Pirates also claimed 50 of the 81 ground ball chances while Oglethorpe's goalie John Brewer made 21 saves while allowing the 23 goals.
Oglethorpe is now 2-9 on the season and will return home for their final two contests of 2011. First up is the University of Dallas this Sunday at 1:00 p.m. on Salamone Field.
