The first season of men's lacrosse at Oglethorpe came to a close on Wednesday evening as the young Petrels rallied furiously against Hanover College before falling late, 8-7.
The Petrels came out flat and the Panthers took advantage, scoring the game's first four goals, all in the first quarter. Oglethorpe made adjustments and bounced back in the second quarter by getting a spirit-lifting strike from the lone senior on Senior Day as Garret LeBlanc tallied with 13:24 to play before half. The Petrels inched closer before the break when Maseo Brown knifed through the Panther defense and found Dustin Carnahan to make the count 4-2 at halftime.
Each team scored twice in the third quarter with Oglethorpe getting goals from Price Hamilton and Arness Holsey. Hamilton scored after scooping up a ground ball and making a length of the field dash punctuated with a hard shot past the Panther keeper. Holsey scored on a hard shot from 15 yards out on the left.
Hanover got the first goal of the fourth to take a 7-4 lead and the scoreboard would remain the same until Carnahan's second strike of the contest at the 5:26 mark ignited a Petrel rally. Oglethorpe pulled within one less than two minutes later as Austin Treadwell connected with Brown for a goal. Holsey tied the game with 2:12 to play and it looked as though Oglethorpe might complete the rally when they took the face-off and got a few chances for the lead. It was the Panthers, however, who got the last tally with only 1:01 to play to dash the Petrels chances.
Oglethorpe finishes the season 3-10 overall and the Petrels look forward to the 2011-12 campaign as this young group gained valuable experience this year.
