Oglethorpe Names Higgins Head Lacrosse Coach

The Oglethorpe University athletics department is pleased to announce the hiring of Tom Higgins to the position of head men's lacrosse coach, effective immediately. Higgins served as the associate head coach to Jay Gardiner during the Stormy Petrels first ever season in 2010-11 and assumes the head position as Gardiner returns full-time to his athletic director's post.

Higgins brings coaching and playing experience from all levels of lacrosse to the Stormy Petrels' program. He played in high school for lacrosse powerhouse Farmingdale on Long Island, N.Y. before taking his talents to the college level at Division I Delaware.

Higgins began his coaching career at State University of New York, Farmingdale where he led the Rams to back-to-back 2nd place junior college finishes. He moved to Georgia in 1990 and has been working as an ambassador for the sport of lacrosse ever since, including coaching stints with Mill Creek High School and the Georgia State Panthers.

"Tom brings nearly 30 years of lacrosse experience to our program and will be an excellent leader for our student-athletes," said athletics director Jay Gardiner. "I can't wait to watch him build our young team up to the competitive standards of the SCAC and am confident he will be successful."
