The Oglethorpe men's soccer team topped Centre College, 1-0, in Birmingham, Ala., in the SCAC championship game Sunday afternoon to claim their first league title. Sean King converted a perfect pass from Jakub Madej in the game's 19th minute to give the Petrels all the cushion they needed.
The Petrels controlled the pace of the contest from the outset and looked the fresher side throughout. Centre, having topped undefeated Trinity on Saturday night and played Friday night, did not have the legs to match Oglethorpe's intensity.
Though Oglethorpe only tallied one goal, they saw several chances glance off the post and crossbar as they continually peppered the Centre goalkeeper. Oglethorpe outshot the Colonels, 16-5, and earned five corners to Centre's one.
The Petrels finish a magical 2011 season with a 17-3 overall record and now await word from the NCAA Tournament committee on who they play and where they will travel. That announcement is expected to come at 1:00 p.m. on Monday as the Petrels get set to make their first ever NCAA Tournament appearance. The 2011 men's soccer SCAC title is the 12th SCAC crown Oglethorpe has claimed. The Petrels also own nine men's golf titles, as well as one each in men's and women's basketball.
