The Oglethorpe men's soccer team extended their winning streak to four games Wednesday night, defeating Covenant 3-1 in Lookout Mountain, Ga.
The first half ended 0-0, but the Petrels exploded out of the gate in the second half, scoring in the 46th minute, only 27 seconds in. Sophomore Carlos Gaston picked up the goal for Oglethorpe, giving them a 1-0 lead. It would be the first of three goals for the young forward on the night. The hat trick takes him to seven goals on the season. He continued in the 52nd minute, giving the Petrels a commanding 2-0 lead.
The homestanding Scots got a goal back in the 69th minute, drawing them back ti within one and putting them right back in the game, but the Petrels put the game away in the 79th when Gaston beat both a defender and the goalkeeper to score his third and final goal of the game. The Petrels would cruise from there.
In addition to his three goals, Gaston got a total of six shots off. Four of them were on target. Freshman Nick Muntean got four shots off, and sophomore Ellis Curry fired three shots each. Curry tallied two assists in the game, as well. The Petrels outshot the Scots 17-12, and had eight corner kicks to Covenant's five.
The win improves the Petrels to 6-1 on the season. They will take on Sewanee in the SAA Campus Kickoff on Saturday. The game will get underway at approximately 4 p.m., depending on when the women's game ends.
