The Oglethorpe men's soccer team won their inaugural SAA conference game Saturday afternoon, defeating Sewanee 2-0 at Salamone Field. The win improves the Petrels to 7-1 on the season and ensures that they start the SAA era 1-0.
The Petrels scored a goal in each half and pretty much asserted their will from the opening whistle, outshooting the visiting Tigers 16-11 and taking seven corner kicks to Sewanee's three.
The Petrels first got on the scoreboard in the 12th minute, when junior defender Nikos Papanikolopoulos turned in a corner kick from Ben Robertson to give Oglethorpe the 1-0 lead. They would take that same lead into halftime, and would then take complete control of the game early in the second half. In the 54th minute, forward Jakub Madej took a cross from Ellis Curry on a play which started on a corner kick, and headed it past the Sewanee goalkeeper to give the Petrels the final 2-0 lead.
The Petrels had seven different players take shots in the game, including forward Carlos Gaston, who took four shots and put two on goal.
Oglethorpe will next be in action on Friday afternoon, when they will welcome Hendrix to Salamone Field for another SAA contest. The game will start at 4 p.m.
