The Oglethorpe men's soccer team lost its third straight game Sunday, losing to Birmingham Southern, 3-0, in Birmingham, Ala.
The Petrels were unable to get much going early in the game, while the home-standing Panthers took a 1-0 lead in the 16th minute and expanded it to 2-0 in the 34th. Oglethorpe mounted a siege of the Birmingham Southern goal in the second half, but were unable to find the back of the net. The Panthers finished the game off in the 70th minute, sending the Petrels to their third loss in a row, and their fourth in their last five outings.
Birmingham Southern only outshot the Petrels 16-13, and each team put six shots on goal. Birmingham Southern outshot the Petrels 12-6 in the first half, while Oglethorpe outshot the Panthers 7-4 in the second.
The loss, coupled with their 3-1 loss at Millsaps Friday, drops Oglethorpe to 8-5 on the season, 2-4 in SAA play. The Petrels will conclude their regular season on Saturday, when they will travel to Mount Berry, Ga., to take on Berry College at 1 p.m. The following weekend, they will travel back to Birmingham to take part in the SAA Tournament.
