Men's Soccer Eliminated by Berry in SAA Semifinals

The Oglethorpe men's soccer team's season ended on Saturday, as they fell to No. 2 seed Berry in the SAA Tournament semifinals, 3-0, at BSC Soccer Park in Birmingham, Ala.

The two teams played scoreless for most of the first half, but Berry struck a major blow in the 38th minute when they scored to take a 1-0 lead seven minutes from halftime.

Defender Joe Buschini came achingly close to equalizing the score for the Petrels around 30 seconds from the halftime whistle, but his blistering shot hit the junction of the crossbar and the post and bounced harmlessly away, ensuring that Berry would keep their 1-0 lead going into halftime.

In the second half, the Vikings put the Petrels in major trouble early on, as they scored again in the 50th minute when a cross deflected off an Oglethorpe defender and into the goal, giving them a 2-0 lead. From that point, the Petrels had to throw numbers forward in large quantities, and though they had several chances that very nearly resulted in goals, Berry was able to score a third goal on the counterattack in the 60th minute, effectively putting the game away.

Berry outshot the Petrels 19-9, including a 10-3 margin in shots on goal. The Petrels did take six corners to Berry's five in the game.

Senior goalkeeper Frank Petersen, playing what turned out to be his final game as a Petrel, did his best to keep his team in the game, as he made seven saves, but the Petrels could not find the back of the net.

The loss means that the Petrels end the season with a 9-7 mark. They compiled a 2-5 record in SAA play over the course of the year.
