    The Oglethorpe athletic department rounded out the season with the Fifth Annual Petey Awards on Sunday, hosted at the Turner Lynch Campus Center on Oglethorpe's campus. The event, which is produced by the Oglethorpe Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), allowed Oglethorpe student-athletes to honor the best and brightest performances of the year while reflecting on the 2016-17 athletic year as a whole.

    The Oglethorpe athletic department will celebrate the start of NCAA Division III Week on Sunday, April 2, with a cookout that will be ongoing during the baseball game against Centre and the men's lacrosse game against Hendrix that afternoon. The cookout will take place from noon to 3 p.m., and will be held at Petey's Party Pavilion, the landing overlooking right field at Anderson Field.

  • Men's Soccer Alum Aaron Walker Signs Contract with FC Cincinnati

    Aaron Walker, a 2012 Oglethorpe graduate who played for the men's soccer team from 2008 to 2011, will be playing professional soccer in the United States in 2017. Late last week, the Woodstock native signed a contract with FC Cincinnati of the United Soccer League (USL).
  • Hoeft, Marquez Named to National Soccer Coaches' Scholar All-South Region Team

    Junior defender Josh Hoeft and junior midfielder Erik Marquez of the Oglethorpe men's soccer team added to the squad's postseason awards bounty this week, as they both took home Scholar All-South Region honors from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA). It marks the first such honor for both players and the second year in a row that at least one member of the Stormy Petrels has earned NSCAA Scholar All-Region accolades.

    Sophomore midfielder Topher Marshall of the Oglethorpe men's soccer team was named to the All-South Atlantic Region Third Team Thursday evening by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA), marking the first All-Region honor of his career. Marshall is the third Stormy Petrel in the last four years to earn All-Region honors.

The five Stormy Petrels selected join a total of 55 student-athletes among the conference's eight full-time and four affiliate members across its seven sponsored fall sports.

  • Men's Soccer Takes Three of Four All-SAA Awards, Puts Nine Men on All-SAA Teams

    The Oglethorpe men's soccer team had an outstanding showing on the All-SAA teams and awards, released Tuesday by the conference office. Three Stormy Petrels earned awards, as senior defender Micah Akin took SAA Defensive Player of the Year, sophomore midfielder Topher Marshall snatched SAA Offensive Player of the Year, and Oglethorpe head coach Jon Akin won his third SAA Coach of the Year award. Meanwhile, junior defender Jordan Locke joined the above two players on the All-SAA First Team; senior midfielder Gustavo Martinez, junior goalkeeper Luke Whelan, junior defender Josh Hoeft, and freshman forward Gabe Alvarez earned spots on the All-SAA Second Team; and junior forward Devon Patterson joined freshman midfielder Andrew Grodhaus on the All-SAA Honorable Mention list.
  • Men's Soccer Season Comes to Abrupt End with SAA Semifinal Loss to Centre

    The Oglethorpe men's soccer team saw their season come to an abrupt end Friday night at the Oglethorpe Track and Field, as they fell to No. 4 seed Centre 4-1 in the SAA Championship semifinals. As the top seed in the tournament, the Petrels had home-field advantage throughout, but the visiting Colonels used a first-half goal against the run of play and two goals off of free kicks in the second half to build a 3-0 lead that was too much for the Stormy Petrels to overcome. Oglethorpe finishes the season at 7-6-3 overall, and Friday's defeat was their first to an SAA team all season.
  • Men's Soccer Cruises to 5-0 Win to Begin SAA Tournament Play

    The top-seeded Oglethorpe men's soccer team made sure there was no mistaking how their SAA quarterfinal matchup against No. 8 seed Hendrix would unfold Saturday afternoon at the Oglethorpe Track and Field. The Stormy Petrels jumped all over the visiting Warriors from the opening whistle and romped to a 5-0 victory in the first round of the conference playoffs. The victory not only improved the Petrels to 7-5-3 on the season overall, it also advanced them to the SAA Championship semifinals on Friday against the winner of the matchup between No. 4 seed Centre and No. 5 seed Birmingham-Southern, set to take place late Saturday afternoon in Danville, Kentucky. As the top overall seed, the Petrels will also host the final two rounds of the SAA Championship Friday and Sunday.

    The Oglethorpe men's soccer team drew its regular season to a close Sunday night in Lawrenceville, Georgia, with a 3-0 loss at NAIA squad Georgia Gwinnett. The defeat dropped the Stormy Petrels to 6-5-3 headed into the SAA playoffs next weekend.
  • Men's Soccer Secures Undefeated SAA Regular Season with 3-2 Overtime Victory at Berry

    The Oglethorpe men's soccer team secured its first-ever undefeated trip through the SAA regular season schedule Saturday afternoon with a 3-2 win over Berry in Mount Berry, Georgia, that took two periods of overtime to decide. Freshman forward Gabe Alvarez scored a couple of goals on the day, including the game-winner in the 109th minute, just 80 seconds before the game would've been declared a tie. The victory improved the team to 6-4-3 on the season overall. They finish the SAA regular season with a 6-0-1 mark.
  • Men's Soccer Clinches Second Consecutive SAA Regular Season Title with 2-0 Win at Millsaps

    The Oglethorpe men's soccer team clinched their second consecutive outright SAA regular season crown Sunday afternoon in Jackson, Mississippi, scoring a pair of goals in the first half en route to a 2-0 victory over Millsaps. The victory ensured the Petrels will have the No. 1 seed and home-field advantage throughout the conference's two-weekend tournament. The Petrels improved to 5-4-3 on the season overall and 5-0-1 in SAA play.
  • Men's Soccer Plays Birmingham-Southern to 0-0 Draw, Retains First Place in SAA

    The Oglethorpe men's soccer team held onto first place in the SAA Friday night with a 0-0 tie against Birmingham-Southern in Birmingham, Alabama. The result moved the Stormy Petrels to 4-4-3 on the season overall and 4-0-1 in SAA play, keeping them undefeated in conference play and giving them 13 points to 12 points for second-place Millsaps. The two teams will play Sunday in Jackson, Mississippi, and the Petrels will have the chance to clinch their second consecutive SAA regular season crown with a win.
  • Men's Soccer Earns 2015-16 Team Academic Award from National Soccer Coaches

    The Oglethorpe men's soccer team earned recognition for their hard work in the classroom over the course of the 2015-16 academic year this week, as they were one of 315 men's college soccer teams to be honored with the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Team Academic Award for exemplary performance in the classroom. The Stormy Petrels totaled a team GPA of 3.01, putting them over the 3.0 mark required to be eligible for this award.
  • Jordan Locke Named SAA Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week

    Junior defender Jordan Locke of the Oglethorpe men's soccer team has been named the SAA Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week for his efforts in the team's victories over Rhodes and Hendrix over the weekend in conference play. He helped the Stormy Petrels to a 3-2 victory over Rhodes and a 3-1 triumph over Hendrix to put the squad in first place by themselves in the SAA at 4-0.
  • Men's Soccer Maintains First Place in SAA with 3-1 Victory over Hendrix on Senior Day

    The Oglethorpe men's soccer team celebrated Senior Day on Sunday at the Oglethorpe Track and Field and did so with a win, as they came back from an early 1-0 deficit to run past the visiting Hendrix Warriors, 3-1. The win improved the Stormy Petrels to 4-0 in SAA play and also brought them back to .500 on the season overall at 4-4-2. The former mark puts the Petrels a game atop the SAA standings with Berry and Millsaps both sitting at 3-1 with three games remaining on the conference slate.
  • Late Fennell Goal Keeps Men's Soccer Unbeaten in SAA Play

    The Oglethorpe men's soccer team found themselves engaged in a tight, back-and-forth battle with Rhodes Friday evening at the Oglethorpe Track and Field, but a late goal by freshman forward Hudson Fennell lifted the Stormy Petrels to a 3-2 victory over the visiting Lynx on a wet night and improved them to a perfect 3-0 in SAA play. The victory also moved the team to 3-4-2 on the season overall.

The Stormy Petrels got goals from sophomore forward Ekow Annan, sophomore midfielder Topher Marshall and freshman forward Gabe Alvarez while junior goalkeeper Luke Whelan earned his second shutout of the season.

The honor marks the first Player of the Week award in the career of the 3-time All-SAA defender.

    The Oglethorpe men's soccer team got a game-winning goal from sophomore midfielder Topher Marshall in the second period of overtime Saturday, propelling them to a 2-1 victory over No. 17 Centre in Danville, Kentucky. Freshman forward Gabe Alvarez won a penalty kick in the first minute of double overtime, leading to Marshall's golden goal. The victory was Oglethorpe's first of the season and improved them to 1-0 in SAA play to start the conference campaign.

    The Oglethorpe men's soccer team found itself in an offensive battle Saturday night in Atlanta against their crosstown rivals from Emory. The Stormy Petrels opened the game with a goal, but the homestanding Eagles scored three straight before the Petrels could respond. Emory walked away with a 3-2 win in the end, dropping the Petrels to 0-4-2 on the young season after 200 minutes of soccer in a little over 24 hours.
  • Men's Soccer Plays Undefeated Lynchburg to 2-2 Tie

    The Oglethorpe men's soccer team found itself in another hard-fought game Friday evening in their home opener at Salamone Field. In the end, they played visiting Lynchburg to a 2-2 draw, moving to 0-3-2 on the young season. The Stormy Petrels came back from a 1-0 deficit early in the second half to take a 2-1 lead, but the visiting Hornets scored an equalizer and the game stayed tied through two overtime periods.
