Men Sweep Past Maryville, Collect 11th Win
The men's tennis team swept past Maryville College on Tuesday afternoon on Downing Howell Courts, 9-0. The Petrels breezed through the doubles matches without dropping a game and used a lineup of underclassmen to overwhelm the Scots in singles play to earn the easy win.
Outside of senior Lawrence Sweatman who was 2-0 playing No. 2 doubles and No. 5 singles, coach Howell's lineup featured one junior (Bryan Bailey), two sophomores (Alex Biffle, Tim Tanko) and three freshmen (Sandy Christoffersen, Ethan Motz, Rajiv Dinakaran). The youthful squad dispatched the Scots with ease in a brisk two hours and twenty minutes. Complete Maryville match results are posted below.
The Petrels are now 11-3 on the season and assured of yet another winning campaign under the guidance of coach Howell. Oglethorpe will host a bevy of SCAC matches this weekend which includes dates against rivals Sewanee (Friday 3:00 p.m.), Birmingham-Southern (Saturday 3:00 p.m.) and Hendrix (Sunday 9:00 a.m.). All Oglethorpe men's contests will take place on Downing Howell Courts.
