The Oglethorpe men's tennis team opened their home season Saturday against Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College, and rode a sweep of the doubles competition to their first victory of the year.
The Petrels started the day out with a 3-0 lead, thanks to a sweep of the doubles portion of the competition against their highly-ranked junior college opponents. The doubles team of senior Bryan Bailey and freshman C.J. Antonio won 8-3, while the team of sophomores Ben Hirsch and Kirk Zhao won 8-3 and the team of freshman Briton Richardson and junior Rajiv Dinakaran outlasted their opponent 8-5.
In the singles portion of the competition, Zhao won his match in the No. 5 slot 6-2, 6-1. This put the Petrels only one match away from clinching the victory. The next match to finish was the No. 1 singles match, where junior Ethan Motz fell 6-3, 6-2, keeping ABAC in it at 4-1.
However, moments later freshman Nick Roby clinched the day for the Petrels when he closed out a comprehensive 6-2, 6-0 victory against his opponent.
Though Oglethorpe went on to lose all three of the remaining matches, they still took home the 5-4 victory, their first of the season.
The Petrels improve to 1-1 on the season after this weekend. They will take the court again next Monday, when they battle Washington and Lee from the Downing Howell Courts at 3 p.m.
